Louis Armstrong (August 4 1901 – July 6 1971) nicknamed Satchmo or Pops, was an American jazz trumpeter and singer from New Orleans Louisiana. It is difficult to assess the importance of Louis Armstrong for the development and history of jazz. He was one of the most influential figures of this species. He was not only an outstanding musician, but also a great showman and was among the first black jazz musicians, which accepted in the upper echelons of white society. He was taken to the hearts of millions of people who would otherwise not have been in contact with the art of black. If Armstrong was not a negro, and in addition derived from the slums, his popularity would be incomparably greater, and the fact that, despite the skin color and social origin has reached such a huge success, it borders on the miraculous. To a large extent was responsible for his unique personality.

Phil Elwood presents a retrospective program dedicated to the music of Louis Armstrong a week after the great musician’s death. The first half of the program is dedicated to Armstrong’s early career in New Orleans during the 1920’s. In the second half of the program, Elwood focuses on recordings that Armstrong made in the 1930s when he had become popular outside of the strictly jazz, mostly African American community and had begun to perform more popular types of songs, including show tunes.
